Getting to Manitoulin

Manitoulin Island is a special destination that takes a little planning to reach. Below are the most common routes depending on where you're starting from.

From Toronto

Drive north on Highway 400 to Highway 69/Trans-Canada Highway through Sudbury, then continue west on Highway 17 to Espanola. From Espanola, take Highway 6 south across the swing bridge at Little Current onto Manitoulin Island.

Approximately 5.5–6 hours

From Ottawa

Take Highway 17 west (Trans-Canada) through North Bay and Sudbury to Espanola. From Espanola, follow Highway 6 south across the swing bridge at Little Current onto Manitoulin Island.

Approximately 6–6.5 hours

From Sudbury

Head west on Highway 17 to Espanola, then take Highway 6 south across the swing bridge at Little Current. A familiar route for those who know northern Ontario — the most straightforward drive to the island.

Approximately 1.5–2 hours

Flying In / Other Locations

Fly into Greater Sudbury Airport (YSB) — the closest major airport. From there, rent a car and drive west on Highway 17 to Espanola, then south on Highway 6 to Manitoulin Island. Alternatively, Toronto Pearson (YYZ) offers more flight options with a longer drive north.

Sudbury airport + ~2 hours driving; Toronto Pearson + ~6 hours driving

Ferry vs. North Side Route

There are two ways onto Manitoulin Island. Choose the one that works best for your trip.

Chi-Cheemaun Ferry

Tobermory → South Baymouth

  • Scenic route — a beautiful 2-hour crossing on Lake Huron
  • Seasonal — runs late May through mid-October
  • Reservation recommended — summer sailings book up quickly; reserve well in advance
  • Ideal if you're driving from southern Ontario or want the scenic experience

North Side (Highway 6)

Espanola → Little Current swing bridge

  • Year-round access — available in all seasons
  • No booking needed — just drive across the swing bridge
  • Reliable backup — if ferry is full or you prefer a guaranteed route
  • Best option from Sudbury, Ottawa, or anywhere north of Manitoulin
